My counter tells me that I have just passed 20,000 followers here on Mastodon. Thank you for following me here, I hope I am making your Mastodon experience better. To celebrate this Round Number Milestone, I have donated $200 to RIP Medical Debt, which buys and then pays off medical debt in the US, for pennies on the dollar. $200 pays off $20K in medical debt, so that's $1 of medical debt wiped out for each of my followers here. It's a good way for me to say "thank you."

RIP Medical Debt
@scalzi Who do they buy this debt from? Collection agencies? I'm looking at their web site but I don't understand how it works.
@atomicbird @scalzi Essentially you make a company that IS a debt collection agency and buy the (discounted) debt from hospitals or other agencies just like they do.
@gregtitus @scalzi Makes sense, but it would be nice if they’d explain that on their site
