What if real freedom isn’t about being able to own unlimited guns…but living in a society where you can go in public without a credible fear of being randomly shot? https://brianklaas.substack.com/p/its-the-guns
It's the Guns.

America is the only rich democracy that features the routine mass slaughter of its citizens with guns. Why does this happen? The data show a really clear picture: It's the guns. Yes, it's that simple.

The Garden of Forking Paths
@brianklaas I feel validated, yet very sad, that I’m not the only one who feels this way: “an increasing number of people stay away from crowded events because they’re worried they’re going to be shot.”
@brianklaas we have been trained in active shooter situations by the police and in webinars. I don’t think librarians were this gun-shy in the past. Maybe the pack horse librarians in Kentucky? But many of us were not frightened of being mowed down by crazy men with military style semiautomatic rifles until quite recently. I speak for myself alone, not for my library. This is just my view.
@brianklaas never thought of my peasant life in the UK being freer than the US but we can go about our business without fear of being shot. And we have an #NHS (for now)
@Lazarou @brianklaas Yep. Scotland’s a great place to live. Negligible gun threat since Dunblane.
@MrInappropriate @brianklaas the sooner you break free from us clowns south of the border the better, England isn't going to sort itself out anytime soon. 😞
...but at least we don't live in fear of spree shootings!
@Lazarou @brianklaas I’d like to break free now. Ironically, my reason for voting No to independence in the referendum was believing the lie that we’d be more likely to remain part of Europe. Not a fan of #westminster Lying buggers, the lot of them.
@MrInappropriate @brianklaas exactly, Scotland was dragged out the EU against it's will and #Westminster would have us think that was fair....a shower of bastards!
@brianklaas It would be nice to not have endless gun fire every weekend.
@brianklaas I won’t travel to the US in the foreseeable future because as a woman of reproductive potential I might have to submit to degrading questions and inspections and might be denied medication in an emergency even while not pregnant at 55, and as someone just going about my day I might get shot by a random nutcase blowing a gasket. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@lovesdaryl @brianklaas
Same here.

And although we find it tough we won't let out daughter study at a US highschool when she's 16. No way is that gonna happen.

It'd be worried sick every second. 😩

@ruedi @brianklaas It’s a crying shame. The US is a beautiful country, and all the people I met there were lovely, but the risk is just too great.
@brianklaas Nah, freedom means you die at school before you can grow a mustache because some guy was upset about something he read on facebook and they sold him a military style rifle at the gun shop down the street from your elementary school.
@brianklaas What's crazy is that it's the party currently in a "save the children" hysteria over drag queen story hour who is willfully ignoring the _actual_ number one threat to children in America, guns.
@hperrin @brianklaas
That sadly sums it up very accurately. 😩
@brianklaas There's also, imo, a dangerous cultural story which describes *how* men deal with stress and mental illness. I remember it starting in the 80s with jokes about people "going postal" if things got too bad. Now nobody is joking anymore but there's a well worn path down that route.

@brianklaas You are absolutely correct, it is.

Thank you for this excellent piece. I’m sure I will share it more than once.

@brianklaas
Yes freedom from being shot is much better that freedom to be a target
@brianklaas What do you mean, "What if..." ?
@brianklaas unfortunately we will never live in a time like that.
@brianklaas The second amendment-ers are the result of them being trained to hear the voice of Uncle Screwtape every time a progressive opens their mouth.
@brianklaas @TheresasMastodon What’s this? Freedom to live? Not take life?
