The thing that makes me the most excited about The Super Mario Movie breaking records is that we're back to pre-covid levels of performance, and it was an animated film that did it.
I sure hope this inspires studio heads and higher ups to trust animation again really soon.
Animation is still relevant. Always has been, always will be.
@xii it's definitely low-risk. I don't expect true innovation to come from these giant studios. Disney, for example, is never going to make stuff for a niche audience.
But I hope that wins like this help us all, since across the board there have been fewer people risking any kind of animation.
Maybe that's wishful thinking, but I hope more innovative stuff will come from this movie being successful, if not from Illumination.
