As someone who lives in a heavily red state bordering Tennessee, I want to underscore Sherrilyn Ifill's powerful point: Tennessee is the nation's future, unless we fight.
Lots of folks think they can shrug or laugh at and ignore what's going on in the Republican-dominated states of the heartland. What else do you expect from the rubes? they say.
Those same people were laughing in 2016 about the ludicrous suggestion Trump might end up in the White House. Those of us living in the red areas knew better. We know what we're dealing with, the determination of white Christian nationalism to impose its will on the nation.
On the heels of what Republicans are doing in Tennesse, Texas judge Matthew Kacsmaryk issued a ruling that will permit one judge in a Republican-controlled state to dictate abortion policy nationwide.
Sherriflyn Ifill is right: if we don't wake up to the danger and fight for our rights, we may soon discover that it's too late. And that the entire nation is one big Tennessee or Texas….
And if that happens, that's when the IEDs and bullets will truly be loosed.
