I think I like the previous small crop better than this whole picture.

One thing might be that there is such a thing as too much contrast, and the previous scan that includes the background texture might be more appealing because of that.

The most jarring part is the composition, though. On the small crop the action is pretty much centered while in this picture the whole composition is off to one side.
