Here is a first class stateroom aboard the Italian liner SS Michelangelo, circa 1965. This was one of the last ships ever built with North Atlantic service primarily in mind. You can see this as an end point in passenger liner interior design. Honestly, doesn't look very comfortable, but I bet the Italian food on this ship was awesome! #histodons #staterooms #oceanliners

@seanmunger Also, I'm intrigued by the pillowcase. Looks like it wraps around to keep the pillow in place, presumably in case of choppy waters.
@beecycling I don't think it is, for two reasons. Fold downs were more common in lower classes (if you need an extra bed in first class, they expect you to pay for another bedroom). Also if it was folded down from there it looks like it'd be too low and too close to the lower bed. I think it's just bad design.
