Can’t wait to share some of these UI/UX improvements in the web and iOS/Android apps over the next few weeks! I think there’s some impactful stuff in the pipeline.
@Gargron bring it on friend!!
@Gargron Question: How about letting the user decide how stuff appear in their feed? Like, if I want to see the most liked posts from my instance/hashtags I follow etc, I can enable that using a few simple toggles.. it would let people create their own feed algorithm to a certain degree..
@cmyrland @Gargron you can do this via a workaround with @megalodon but not sure you meant that. You should try it at least.
@gmate8 I’ll give it a try, thanks for the tip! @Gargron @megalodon

Attached: 1 image Elon made me angry so I developed a free "For You" Feed for Mastodon. It uses a very simple customizable algorithm that includes your feed but also top posts from multiple other instances. It favours accounts that were reblogged multiple times in your feed, or accounts you interacted with in the past. Its still in early development, but if you are aware of the risks of trying out late night software you can try it here: https://fedifeed.herokuapp.com Also the code is here: https://github.com/pkreissel/fedifeed/tree/main

@pkreissel
Nice. I hope Mastodon itself picks up this feature. Using various apps and modded instances is cool and all, but I hope development towards a more user friendly Mastodon doesn't rely on 3rd party apps alone.
@Gargron
@cmyrland @Gargron mostly made the demo so others would pick up on it

@cmyrland @Gargron

Most liked would be an algorithm, I think. And many of us came here to get away from algorithms.

This is also why we have # hashtags. We can follow #photography or #photos or #landscapes, depending on our own interests and tastes. 🙂

@MaryPot
Well, the problem is that over here I miss out on a lot of the good stuff - because I forget to check alllll of the hashtags I'm following, or because I tend to hang around in my home feed and forget to scroll through the local feed.

Giving the user an option to choose what content they want to see in their home feed would resolve a lot of this issue. And it would be opt-in, so if you like it chronological and manually checking your hashtags, no worries.
@Gargron

@cmyrland @Gargron

I haven't looked at my local feed more than maybe once a week after the first couple of weeks here.No need, because I have found people and hashtags to follow. Maybe you forget to scroll the local feed because you have started getting your home feed to include what you want to see.

You have TOTAL control over what you see in your home feed by following people and hashtags. You don't have to follow either for ever, you can unfollow and remove hashtags too.

@cmyrland @Gargron

As you follow hashtags, you find people who post a lot of stuff you like, so you follow them. You mute the people who post stuff not to your taste. That reduces the amount of posts on that hashtag, but you still see what you like to see.

Muting accounts on Mastodon is not like on other sites. Here, it is how you tweek your own algorith. 🙂

@MaryPot
Yes, I know, but it still doesn't fix the issue that if you posted something cool a day or two ago and I didn't see it right after you posted, I would never know unless I accidentally stumbled across it later on. There should be more variables to choose from other than following and muting people.
@Gargron

@cmyrland @Gargron

If you like what I post and suspect you missed something cool, all you have to do is go to your following list and click on me to see everything I have posted.

Yes, updating doesn't let you scroll far enough down, and that is frustrating, but better to allow scrolling as far back as we want than to start putting in algorithms the users have no control over.

@Gargron What's wrong with the UI?
@Gargron Is the volume of the video player also saved (cookie)? That is so annoying to adjust the volume every time.
@Gargron will mainline mastodon get markdown/html posts and custom emoji reactions finally?
@Gargron i just wanted to say thank you for your work. I'm so glad there's such a good alternative to the toxic pile of shite called shitter.
@Gargron at least we know it won't involve a cringey dog meme, this is a place for grown ups (mostly)

@Gargron Looking forward to it! Mastodon, while had a great community takes a bit of mental adjustment to understand “how it works”.

The better the UI the more of the adoption rate I hope!

@Gargron I sure hope some work has been done on the IOS add in regards to voiceover screen reader users. The scrolling is kind of broken.
@edhowland @Gargron
Ignorant question: is there a proper place to report bugs or request features?

@Gargron

just make #Megalodon the official android app. it so good.

@Gargron can’t wait to see them
@Gargron can't wait to see them!
@Gargron Thank you for all the hard work!
@Gargron any chance people can opt in to quote toots?
@Gargron would like to talk about growth if you have the time.
@Gargron This is so much better than following Musk with his attempts to be cool
@Gargron Let our third-party applications help you
@Gargron Hi! Do you have any plans to create a normal desktop client in any feasible future? :) Mobile apps are great (and even there are cool alternatives like Ice Cubes) but no good app for desktops… :( everything that tries to pack web into an electron (or similar) — em.. Let’s say gently — doesn’t suit for me well :)
@Gargron Hi Eugen, could you create a 'For You' page and set it as the default homepage, similar to how Twitter does it? This way, people can effortlessly discover new posts and users. Overall, it would be great if you could incorporate the same user interface and discoverability features from Twitter into Mastodon.
