Hi!! A new batch of manga is about to start in Shonen Jump this month, so like last time here’s a thread about each upcoming debut.

Titles are all based off of Japanese info right now and will probably get changed localized names as they get simulpublished over here!

Series 1: Tenmaku Cinema

A manga about a film enthusiast high school boy that seems to have supernatural elements.

This work comes from the duo that made Food Wars, the INCREDIBLY fanservicey cooking series. I like the high concept of a boy that can film ghosts or whatever but the authors previous pedigree obviously worries me.

I’ll give it a chapter, if fanservice is an integral element of this series I’m bailing right away.

Interest: 7/10

Series 2: Kiruao

An action comedy about an assassin high schooler. Him holding the gun in this promo image is a jump scare, it’s killing me

This comes from another veteran mangaka, the creator of Kuroko’s Basketball. I haven’t experienced much of either work but I’m intrigued by Kiruao.

It’ll be interesting to see if it offers anything different than other assassin series already in SJ like Sakamoto Days and Yozakura Family.

Interest: 7/10

Series 3: Doritori / Dri Tri

Described as a “post war boxing manga”! Is this post apocalyptic? Is it historical and set after WW2 or something? It’s not clear yet!

Yet another returning author, this time the mangaka of the axed, very bad series “Bone Collection”.

The art here is already an upgrade over Bone Collection and I’m a sucker for cool / creative sports manga. I’m willing to see if the author can redeem themself with their 2nd series.

Interest: 8/10

Series 4: Nue no Onmyouji

An exorcist battle manga about high schoolers fighting yokai, from newcomer Kōta Kawae.

Honestly, the design of the female lead already worries me. Shonen Jump also has had a tendency in batches to release a mediocre exorcism manga that gets axed a batch or two later.

But hey, newcomer mangakas in the magazine are always interesting. Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Interest: 5/10
