The argument that I have heard is the the U.S. is a “Republic, not a Democracy”…..which is b.s. We are a Democratic Republic, a Representative Democracy.
In other words, we are not a true either/or. Look at all the countries which claim to be Republics….they are ALL authoritarian states. All of the countries with “Republic of” are exactly the countries Republicans claim to hate….Communist, ogliarchy regimes, usually patriarchal societies run by madmen.
