We are starting to hear about carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere - the “net” in net zero. But it’s pointless until we have almost completely decarbonised. This essay from @davidho sets out why: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-00953-x

"Meanwhile, if everyone on Earth planted a tree — 8 billion trees — it would take us back in time by about 43 hours every year, once the trees had matured.

The time-machine analogy reveals just how futile CDR currently is."

Carbon dioxide removal is not a current climate solution — we need to change the narrative

Drastically reduce emissions first, or carbon dioxide removal will be next to useless.

I think Adam does a great job here covering off all the key reasons.

Carbon Capture Isn't Real

@helenczerski @davidho Just don’t see it ever being commercially viable. Just another smoke screen. My two cents.
@helenczerski @davidho As lucky owner of two of the hard to abate sectors David mentions, I’ve been discussing with my team whether we need to start policy work on CDR.
@rutherdan @helenczerski 3 words: Sustainable aviation fuel. 🙃
@davidho @helenczerski Riddle me this: if we really can capture large volumes of CO2, is it better to put it into e-kerosene or into the ground?
@rutherdan @helenczerski that’s a good question. Has anyone looked at this?
@helenczerski Carbon capture is a sad joke, good only for greenwashing...

@helenczerski @davidho

One of the most effective ways of reducing carbon in history was when more of us were working from home a few years ago.

@helenczerski @davidho 16 planted here, some quicjk growing to make as early a contribution as possible. Reolace hedges as well. Holly and Hazel mostly here

Let this SINK IN:

"for every year of [CDR] operation at its full potential, each hub would take the atmosphere back in time by almost **13 minutes**,

...but in the time it took to remove those 13 minutes of CO2, the world would have spewed another **full year of CO2 into the atmosphere." ***

@helenczerski Still worth planting trees, though, as they offer more benefits than just removing carbon. Trees bring down the temperature, literally and figuratively, decrease use of AC, make walking and biking more inviting modes of transportation. Also, trees make cities more inviting places to live, esp for people used to yards & trees, supporting higher density living >> more walking, biking, public transport, and shorter/fewer car trips. Definitely plant as many trees as you can.
