“Help,” cries the journalist, “I’m being held captive by Elon Musk!”

He calls out from the unlocked cage, door wide open, to which he holds the key in his own hands.

“Quickly,” he begs now, “I can’t bear the thought that someone might think I’m paying for this.”

He gestures to the searing blue legacy checkmark, a brand affixed not to his skin, but the cage.

Concerned passersby leave treats at the door, in the hopes he might free himself. But alas, he shall surely starve.

@Haste this is too smart for me. Can you dumb down the metaphor a bit? I think this is about NYTimes just being horrible lately, yeah?

@girlbaus I did read about that, but it’s more specifically about this trend I noticed:

Twitter missed the deadline to remove all legacy check marks, and instead changed the language on them to obscure whether they’re legacy or subscription based. So, users in my local feed are posting anxiety that others might mistake them as being suckered into paying for Twitter Blue.

To me, that misunderstanding is besides the point. Leave! 🤣

I don’t like call out posts, so I did this way.

@Haste @girlbaus I have zero respect for anyone still on that app! What the fuck is wrong with people?

@Haste

Welcome to the elongated crawl space...

@Haste is it because corporate media has become a joke and the masses are accustomed and benumbed by it that the accelerated malignancy of twitter has yet to become an inviable platform?
@Haste I want to help them, but I don't know how.
@Haste When a cow-shed or a stable burns, the rescued animals will often run back into the fire, back to the safest space they know.

@hakona @Haste

So, locking the door after the horse has bolted can be useful... Good to know!

@Homebrewandhacking @Haste As long as the bird site exists, they'll keep going back into the dumpster-fire.

@Haste I'm reading a book that includes talking about learned helplessness, and it's literally this.

Past experiences of trying to effect change and failing (or even being punished for it) induces helplessness.

It can be so severe that it inhibits action even when the potential for positive action is clear and simple.

@Haste He’s only a bird in a Gilded Cage. 🎶
