Some days I just want to hide under my desk and pretend the news cycle isn't dominated by AI doomsday prophesiers
@Riedl Prophets. Or seers. AI will have their jobs, though.
@Riedl Whenever I feel like that, I remember that Trump is indicted, Fox News has been found to have defamed a seller of voting equipment and Disney mousetrapped Ron DeSantis with an arcane bit of contract law...

@Riedl
I keep reminding myself that a true general AI will know the Price equation and be able to explain to (oh, so forgetful) humans the irrefutable systemic benefit of altruism.

THE PRICE OF ALTRUISM | Kirkus Reviews

The strange story of an oddball scientist who developed a mathematical approach to understanding altruism.

Kirkus Reviews
@Riedl Hal, Open the pod bay doors!
@Riedl what's the best case you've seen against 'AGI' as an existential risk? Not: (1) best case against arguments in Time magazine/turning us into paperclips, or (2) best case against current ML/AI systems. The simple argument seems strong to me: the systems we're building to be more capable than we are will become more capable, at which point we lose our dominant role as a species, taking a place alongside dolphins, chimpanzees...
@rowat_c @Riedl what does 'more capable' mean? Isn't the Google algorithm already far more capable than anyone on the planet at what it does?
@Riedl I share that feeling, but is it because you also believe in that scenario and do not want to ruin your last days, or because you think it is all completely out of wack?
