Sounds like the water tanks are starting to fill. We got the collection setup finished this morning, just in time to catch the predicted afternoon rain showers.

Pump and float work great, plumbing down to tanks works great (well, it's a VERY long garden hose). I might be able to back off hauling water all the time!

@mmeadway

What will you be using the collected water for? Toilet flush?

@Tazor Yes, all for non-drinking purposes. Showers, laundry, toilets and so forth. We've got about 3,000 gallons of capacity, and so far we've added around 100 gallons in the last three hours.

I'm very happy to see that!

@mmeadway

Nice. It is filtered before usage, right?

@Tazor Yes, we use an activated carbon filter. Works really well; we also add chlorine occasionally to keep it disinfected. I plan on getting a UV disinfection unit.

@mmeadway

Very cool. All houses should have that, why use drinking water for those purposes?

@Tazor Exactly our thinking. We're also considering getting a reverse osmosis unit so we can use some of the grey water (laundry) in the garden. Trying to conserve as much as possible.
