@bit101 While I personally believe there's a lot of problems with the typical ratings process done "at scale" (stack ranking, curves, etc), I think the main point in the article is solvable because the expectations are set per level; they're not absolute. So yes, in that system someone can "exceed expectations", be promoted, then "don't meet expectations" even though they did exactly the same work.
@zeh @bit101 that tends to lead to a "promote until they fail, then let them go" cycle which is pointless. if we could ignore salary, i'd rather skip a promotion and stay in a fulfilling role that i can do well

But yes, expectations are definitely level based. But even so, senior leadership wants to see "more 3s" regardless of level.
