Proud of my friends on the streets in Israel, where mass demonstrations have reached a Tahrir Square moment last night.

Israelis took to the streets 12 weeks in a row to prevent a judicial overhaul that would transform Israel into the next Poland/Hungary.

Last night, Netanyahu fired his defense minister who called for delaying the overhaul. All over the country, 100,000s of people stepped out at 10pm to protest. Today, a general strike and increasing prospects of the gov backing down 👌 🤞

I mean, how can you not love this deliriously optimistic protest (posted by @MichalFeldman9@twitter)
@Mor It would be disastrous for Netanyahu if the government were to back down on attempting to seize the judiciary, as then he'd go to trial.
@toxtethogrady well he *is* on trial, trying to escape his fate -- but with this coalition they have been pushing for a lot more
@Mor I wonder how big the influence of Israelite Russian immigrants is on this? Having lived through Soviet Troika’s, where the govt was judge jury and prosecutor would they be quick to saying no to govt also being the law?
@pinhman I don't know the numbers. Lieberman, the leader of the party that draws a lot of the Russian immigration vote, is in the opposition and has been speaking decidedly and publicly against these steps.
@Mor this move by Netanyahu would end democracy in Israel as he is in the process of being indicted for corruption. Another trump.
@Mor yes...are they including Arabs and Palestinians affected by the Netanyahu govt do you know? I am not there but i believe a unity protest would be very meaningful of all peaceful peoples who believe in democracy. That might sound hokey but i have friends on both sides there are definitely people who can unify over this. and in the outcome we need a Justice first and Human Life first govt. Sorry if this sounds proscriptive but do you know much about it?
@gvelez17 unfortunately these protests did not widely include the Arab and Palestinians. Broad popular movements in Israel are not yet able to address the challenges of the occpuation, sadly.

@Mor yeah, i think for real justice & democracy that is key. Maybe working together will help some, i have done small bits of work with Gaza SkyGeeks folks, would like to do more - if there were more partnerships maybe then it would be more like "hey not my colleague!"

Anyway that is me spitballing from here

But i do think human life being equal is fundamental value we need
