Bitcoin’s environmental impact is on the rise again as the BTC price has been moving up. Per my own estimates Bitcoin is now responsible for consuming as much electricity as half of global data centers combined. Cambridge even puts it at the same level as country like Argentina (~40% more).

This also means Bitcoin mining accounts for roughly half a percent of global electricity consumption. With more that a third of BTC mining taking place in the US, it is responsible for well over 1% of the total electricity consumption in the US.

The average electricity consumed per unique Bitcoin transaction processed on the BTC blockchain equals the electricity consumption of an average US household over the period of an entire month.

The associated carbon emissions with all this electricity consumption are equivalent to the carbon footprint of a country such as Austria. This is more than enough to negate the global avoided emissions by deployed electric vehicles (~50Mt per year according to the IEA).

The carbon footprint of a single Bitcoin transaction easily exceeds the per passenger carbon footprint of a direct flight from New York to London.

On top of that the average e-waste generation per Bitcoin transaction is also equivalent to throwing away an iPad.

Bitcoin mining consumes the electricity equivalent of 180 full train-cars of coal every day.

This is what a 150-car coal train looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECfgeXZbGJE&t=84s
