The white Christian #republicans have been anti-government and anti-everyone for a very long time. This is from MAD magazine 1968.
@ArtistClancy Merca. It's always been the same. Now there's 24/7 coverage
@ArtistClancy
The only difference is that now they think the "Very Rich" are gods walking among men, and worship the ground they walk upon.

missing caption: an old white guy wearing a very patriotic-looking suit sitting in a chair

down below him is this text:
See the Super Patriot.
Hear him preach how he loves his country.
Hear him preach how he hates "Liberals"...
And "Moderates"... and "Intellectuals"...
And "Activists"... and "Pacifists"...
And "Minority Groups"... and "Aliens"...
And "Unions"... and "Teenagers"...
And the "Very Rich"... and the "Very Poor"...
And "People With Foreign-Sounding Names".
Now you know what a Super Patriot is.
He's someone who loves his country
While hating 93% of the people who live in it.

@KitRedgrave Thank you for catching that I forgot the description and adding it! ❤
@ArtistClancy Sometimes I look these up because they seem too on-point to be true; this one checks out -- https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/mad-magazine-super-patriot/
Did MAD Magazine Publish 'Super Patriot' Cartoon in the 1960s?

So-called "Super Patriots" love their country, according to the illustration, while hating 93% of the people in it.

@awwaiid Yes! And what I posted is true!
@ArtistClancy … sigh is not a big enough word …
@ArtistClancy As a young preacher's kid, I loved MAD magazine. Good to see how prescient and timeless it is. And good to know I'm that same rebellious PK coz I love this.
@MargaretSefton I grew up in an ultra religious environment too and MAD magazine was a safe harbor, a port of sanity for me! I ran screaming from the conservative religion just as soon as I could - and I still love MAD magazine... and Monty Python and...anything that points out hypocrisy and lampoons it.
@ArtistClancy Yes! I was late running away, hung around for the marriage into conservative Christian culture, but divorce was the break for me. Now I don't get so depressed. Go figure! Laughing about these things is critical. ❤️ 😆 🦋

@ArtistClancy Interesting that he doesn't say that he hates people of color, although he certainly does. But in 1968 he would have used racist language that a G-rated publication like Mad couldn't print.

Important to note that in 1968, both parties pandered to such people, though neither so thoroughly embraced them as the GQP has done.

@ArtistClancy I'm starting to think that patriot might not mean what I thought it meant.😂
@ArtistClancy This is mocking a flavor of nationalism that used to be more interventionist, but has now become more isolationist – so I think Super Patriot doesn't hate "pacifists" anymore, he has become one. 😂 He hates supporting Ukraine with his taxes instead.
@ArtistClancy while i do def agree. please cw your stuff.
@Kazii what does "cw" mean?
@ArtistClancy content warning. the ! in the text bubble

@ydenaar
As a true soixante-huitard, I remember it like it was yesterday.
Harrowing to see nothing has changed
@ArtistClancy A few years before this they were still the White Christian "Democrats".
@ArtistClancy
I always loved Mad magazine.
