Golly“Laid” by James just came on Spotify so I’m going to start a thread of songs about folks who “mess around with gender roles.” I’m white, and these are songs that white-dominant culture sang along and celebrated for decades, but which white-dominant would throw a shitfit about today. I mean a week of Fox programming, a segment on Bill Maher, and three NYT Opinion pieces.
For starters: Laid, by James, about a man in a relationship w/a terrifying woman: Maher’s down with kinky lyrics, but says it’s pathetic to see a man bullied by his #woke partner. Fox takes the mention of a therapist to argue “even Hollyweird liberals admit: mental disorders follow from transgenderism” despite the fact that the band’s English, the lyrics don’t deal with trans people, and the term “transgenderism” is some trolling bullshit. David Brooks would misquote the song as “James” by Laid.
