Am I the only one that feels like online discussions about LLMs are starting to feel just a bit like Crypto did 2 years ago?

To be sure, there *is* something relevant and powerful about LLMs. But the uncritical and exuberant discussions along with the hand wringing angst feels so Gartner Hype Cycle.

Of course LLMs have amazing potential! But really, just chill out, build some thing and, you know, see how it goes first?

@scottjenson I'm just waiting for the next winter. They always come eventually and things eventually settle down to the technology being used in a calmer way.

@scottjenson

But that won't get the silly-money-VC's interested... :(

@scottjenson You just summed up my feeling as well. You're not the only one, no. 😕 It's really annoying at times.

@scottjenson I'm in the spend-every-waking-moment-talking-about this camp, so to explain a little: I think all the people who have to make long term plans (startups) see there is large "new platform / your major product is now a minor feature" style disruption coming, but the future is so opaque that sharing loudly with the intent of figuring it out is all we can do

(would love to jam with you on this sometime!)

@gmurphy Again, I agree, I don't doubt it will be powerful but it is primarily a text generating system, which is frequently wrong. Working with a stochastic model of truth is new territory.

The reason most hyped technologies fall into the 'trough of disillusionment' is that the boosters didn't appreciate tiny issues, that ended up having huge negative impacts. I think we'll be finding more of these as we go on.

Love to have a virtual coffee about this.
