Teresa Hanafin writes,

"Remember that Nebraska meatpacking plant where a cleaning service was using underage migrant kids to work? Turns out the company, Packers Sanitation Services, was employing kids as young as 13 in slaughterhouses around the country. The feds found 102 children in eight states."

"The Labor Department ended up fining the company $1.5 million. Whoop-de-doo.

The kids at the meatpacking plant in Grand Island, Neb., worked the overnight, or graveyard, shift. According to The Washington Post, their job was to scrub blood and beef fat from the slippery floor where the animals were killed. They used high-pressure hoses, scalding water, and industrial foams and acids."

"They also sanitized the electric knives, fat skinners, and 190-pound saws that the slaughterhouse workers use to split open cow carcasses. Some of the kids got chemical burns and blistered skin. Because they worked overnight, they were so sleep-deprived that they fell asleep during classes at school.

In fact, a lot of the cases were uncovered because school nurses and teachers noticed burns, open wounds, and exhaustion among their students and reported it."

"Ten of the kids employed by that slaughterhouse cleaning company were working in Arkansas. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the new Republican governor there and mother of three kids ages 7, 9, and 10, reacted to that jump in child labor law violations -- only not in the same way that those with a soul reacted."
