You really should read @Popehat's piece on poor-babies law students, Stanford University stupidity, a judge's ideologically useful delight in being a "victim", and the (reliable) sleaziness of the Federalist Society -- a case in which everyone involved was spitting on freedom of expression in order to make a point. https://popehat.substack.com/p/hating-everyone-everywhere-all-at

Don't Expect Free Speech Disputes To Have Heroes

The Popehat Report
@dangillmor @Popehat while I don’t always agree with some of the priorities and principles he articulates, his clear-eyed and unromantic explanation of the core concepts of laws around free speech, harassment, and so on have always been *top notch*

@dangillmor years back, one of his posts included a gem along the lines of:

“When explaining workplace harassment guidelines, there are three types of people. 80% gasp and say, ‘people SAY that?’ 10% gasp and say, ‘shit, I gotta stop that.’ And then the other 10% pays my mortgage.”

@eaton
Yeah the checks write themselves in that line of work.
@dangillmor
@dangillmor @Popehat The train left the station of mutual respect and free speech for everyone several hundred miles ago. It is about to pull into the station of rampant political violence. (Not endorsing this just predicting it)

@dangillmor @Popehat
I wasn't on campus; I wasn't there. That makes it very hard to be able to speak with any accuracy or fidelity about the campus conflict around 1st Amendment.

But this is an excellent summation from the perspective that everyone is being a stupid jerk. And maybe how to be a little less dumb.

@dangillmor @Popehat hmmm... Interesting read. Seems like a neutral moderator could have helped the situation. Ideally someone to help both sides students and speaker to voice there strongest arguments and rebuttals.
