Both chambers of the Michigan legislature voted to pass a bill repealing the state's right-to-work law.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer plans to sign it, making Michigan the first state in nearly 60 years to ditch one of these anti-union laws.

This is a big deal.

@JimMaruschak @rbreich The US’s poor employee protection laws mean that for those most vulnerable, unions are their only protection. Optional unions mean no unions, especially in those places where abuses are most likely.

@ayling @rbreich They took my money every week and did zilch. I know you have an idealized view of organized labor, but it was a scam.

And the unions I was in had links to organized crime.

I would have preferred to keep my money.

@rbreich @JimMaruschak I don’t have an idealized view. I fought against a union in the UK, but if you didn’t like your representation, there’s an easy answer, just as there is with democracy. Stand yourself.

@ayling @rbreich Ultimately I graduated and got better non-union jobs where my pay depended on my own performance and not the deal mass-negotiated with the low productivity workers.

My hubby has been a teamster in MI for 13 yrs.
But it was impossible to start a new Union.
It was disgraceful.
Now we get to “hold our head’s high again(so to speak)!
