European defence industry is sailing around without clear destination

As the war in Ukraine continues, there is uncertainty among the European defence industry about what is expected of them. Esa Rautalinko, CEO of defence equipment company Patria, believes that Europe's defence policy-making is slow-moving and that concrete orders for ammunition are urgently needed. 1/5

Rautalinko argues that political decisions must be taken now to launch large-scale production of arms and ammunition, as without them nothing will happen.

Although some European countries, such as Finland, Norway, Poland and the Baltic states, have begun to build a counter-attack against Russia in Eastern Europe, decision-making is faltering in Central and Western Europe. 2/5

Rautalinko emphasises that political decisions on orders must be the basis, and that there is a broad consensus on what kind of assistance Ukraine needs.

It is concerning that ammunition purchases in many European countries have been in the order of a few thousand rounds a year. If such a country decides to give Ukraine ammunition aid for its entire annual volume, it will help Ukraine for only one day. 3/5

Concrete orders for ammunition are urgently needed to ensure that Ukraine can defend itself against Russian aggression.

The European defence industry must act quickly to provide the necessary support to Ukraine. Political decision-making on orders must be expedited to launch large-scale production of arms and ammunition. European countries must increase their ammunition purchases and provide concrete orders for ammunition to support Ukraine's defence against Russian aggression. 4/5

Without concrete orders, Europe's defence industry will not be able to help Ukraine effectively.
