Right-Wing Think Tank Family Research Council Is Now a Church in Eyes of the IRS

The FRC, a staunch opponent of abortion and LGBTQ rights, joins a growing list of activist groups seeking church status, which allows organizations to shield themselves from financial scrutiny.

@morgfair

WTF... my ass they're a religion.

@lednabm @morgfair Hmm...given the tax advantages, maybe I should apply for exempt status as a church. I think I could make a credible argument for meeting the requirements (and I happen to be ordained).

Heck, if the FRC -- a blatantly political organization -- can get recognized, why not some of us?

@mmeadway @morgfair indeed.... this tax status stuff is evil and precisely the kind of endorsement of religion the constitution forbids.

@lednabm @morgfair I just re-read the rules, and realized that because we are a large family that lives on the same property (in separate housing), we meet all of the qualifications if I simply create a few documents.

In short, if I meet the requirements, I can get a religious exemption from taxes. I don't think that's what the founders had in mind.

@mmeadway @morgfair agreed, but if you can get away with it, no harm trying.
@mmeadway @lednabm @morgfair Trump would do it if he could. It would be a satanic church, but a church nonetheless.

@morgfair

Taking their cues from Elron Hubbard.

@morgfair This kind of nonsense will be the death of the Republic. There should be no IRS "church status" at all, but to grant it to this overtly political entity is truly an insult to the founders.

@morgfair

Oh, Sweet Baby Jeebus, NO!

@morgfair once Scientology got it, the gates were thrown open to every scam out there.
