It’s not explained explicitly in #2OO1 the film, but discussed in the novelization and sequel, that HAL is driven insane by 1) being told the true purpose of the mission, 2) being ordered to lie to Dave and Frank about it. (It’s mentioned in the Floyd video.) #TCMParty
