@kernellogger please tell me how to correctly pronounce your last name for next time πŸ˜€

@jonmasters

don't worry about that, I don't care.

It's a Dutch name originally spoken something like this:
https://forvo.com/word/leemhuis/#nl

I grew up near the Netherlands, but even there they pronounced it a bit differently, as people speak https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Frisian_Low_Saxon in that area.

Both pronunciations are a bit odd for most Germans, that why I often use a different pronunciation.

And all three sound a bit odd in English, that why I struggle with my own name sometimes when speaking English myself.

@kernellogger @jonmasters I have exactly the same problem.
@kernellogger @jonmasters you may think I'm joking (and to be sure, I am), but Jones is Welsh for "John's", as in the followers of the king who signed the Magna Carta under duress, so we pretty much all just pronounce it wrong.
@kernellogger @jonmasters but also my first name is obviously derived from Greek, and my middle name is Hebrew, and they're all just super duper common.

@vathpela @jonmasters

ha, the thought "is he joking" definitely occurred, but it was followed by a thought like "with names and pronunciation you never know, even if something looks simple"

@kernellogger @vathpela @jonmasters

Here's something to blow everyone's minds: I *know* how to say my name correctly, and I don't, on purpose with most people. Because when I say my name correctly, everyone else who hears it just goes ahead and says it even more wrong. So I go with the least bad wrong pronunciation so others don't screw it up worse.

(Explaining this to an Indian who complained I was saying my own name wrong was *fun*... 😩 )

@Conan_Kudo @kernellogger @vathpela @jonmasters yeah, people's reaction is disappointing 😞. Thanks for sharing.

I have quite a few Irish friends, so I'm used to the spelling of names having nothing to do with English or German pronounciation rules.

That said, I would have pronounced Thorsten's last name wrong, with a long u on the second syllable (and I would have gotten the first syllable right due to having lived close to Venlo for a decade.

Ah, language, what a mess!

Remember: it's spelled "Luxury Yacht", but pronounced "Throatwarbler Mangrove".
