Just a reminder that the idea of a personal carbon footprint is propaganda invented by British Petroleum (BP) to distract from corporate responsibility for climate change by implying that changes to personal behavior are all we need to prevent global warming.
@jacob Personal carbon footprints are also a great way to use the idea of a budget to stop people behaving in such a way that is against the interests or beliefs of those that have, or wish to have, power over you. Humans need energy to survive and to thrive.
@jacob @VulpineAmethyst Just a reminder to folks that BP hasn't stood for British Petroleum since the rebranding after the amoco merger in 1998, and was reduced to just BP in 2001.
@chloeraccoon what’s your point?
@jacob That they hadn't been British Petroleum for 6 years by the time BP started the personal footprint bollocks *nods*
@chloeraccoon I still don’t understand why this is so important that you needed to well actually be about it. I’m well aware that BP would like me to think that they dropped the “Petroleum” because they’re not evil any more but I fail to see why I should comply with their attempt at greenwashing.
@jacob Why not call them Amoco then? That's also not their name by that point, but it is a name they had closer to the point you are referencing then British Petroleum.
@chloeraccoon this is a very weird conversation because I still don’t understand why you care. It feels like you just want to prove you’re smarter than me which, ok congrats.

@jacob there's a word for that!

Responsibilization !

@jacob the only way that changes in personal behavior fix it is if people don't help these big corps, but that's harder to accomplish with how they caused a reliance on em
@jacob I know, right? In 2020 we all stayed home and did nothing for a year and it barely affected the CO2 measurements.
@jacob @charles_ex thx so china approach surveillance all not just random cut down @aloa5

@jacob @aleen
We do have a personal footprint that we must recognise… but it’s tiny compared to business so I agree it’s propaganda.

It’s like a ‘bag for life’ was invented to offload the moral guilt for a plastic bag, except when you get caught short for a bag, you are now paying twice the price for twice the plastic. Only Co-Op did it right with biodegradable bags.
