Ugh! The USENIX Enigma conference was hands down the best security conference in the world. Now it's suspended with no plans for it to be resumed. Very sad.

Update on the Enigma Conference from the Enigma Steering Committee | USENIX

@dangoodin This sucks! This was my first year presenting and I got COVID. They played a recording of my talk, but I didn't get to attend in person.

The whole process of preparing for the con was great, and I loved how they used Slack as both an out-of-band and in-line conference tool.

@dangoodin Why would they not consider turning it into a virtual conference is a enigma.
@mingwei Sounds like the current economic conditions just aren't favorable to putting on a conference like that. I'm guessing that hosting the con virtually won't change that.

@dangoodin yeah, looks like the USENIX org overall is not doing great financially.

2022 USENIX Annual Meeting Report | USENIX

@mingwei @dangoodin well they have events that are doing financially good because of big sponsors, such as SRECon. Clearly they could not get enough sponsors to keep Enigma alive.
@dangoodin Damn this is a massive bummer. Enigma is a brilliant concept and execution: "TED talks with actual content"
@dangoodin Had the honor of speaking here for the first time this year. Sad it could be the last. @joebeone and @Wednesday did a fabulous job organizing this year.
@Kingjen @dangoodin @Wednesday I don't think I'm giving anything away when I say we hope to start a process figuring out what the community might need in an event like this (that would bring people)

@dangoodin @Kingjen @joebeone even before recent budget cuts in security, community investment has been shifting/shrinking.

Everyone wants a turn at the mic, but few chip in to pay for the communal stage.

If even half the companies who sent talk proposals donated just $5K each, we’d be in a very different ballpark.

@Wednesday @dangoodin @Kingjen @joebeone far too many companies want to sneak by on pizza and beer marketing budget instead of spending real money to make real profit. This hurts the whole community.
@sfoskett @dangoodin @Kingjen @joebeone it’s a culture of leeching vs contributing. Think about how many people use open source code compared to those who support or maintain it.
