Stephen Hawking says,

"It’s my view that the simplest explanation is that there is no God. No one created the universe and no one directs our fate."

To me that reflects an ultimately rather sad tendency — one that's especially frequent in modern, Western, scientistic outlooks — to presume that religious language is part of some kind of primitive science that's looking to explain the world.

@bodhidave I think you are being far too optimistic about the majority of US Christians who appear to take a literal view of Christian mythology. What is the basis of your conclusion?

It's not clear what is the basis of your conclusion. I'm not markedly "optimistic" about the majority of US Christians, many of whom I find mirror that same mistake, of taking effectively tropic, experience- and practice-oriented religious language literally and as, instead, dogmatically propositional concepts.
