✌️ BREAKING: @FCNantes took a train to Paris for their match #PSGFCN
What should be a casual note in 2023 is in fact the result of a victorious climate mobilization:
How we got a Ligue 1 football team to get on a train rather than their usual plane 🧵
In september, @PSG_inside|’s @KMbappe made the news with his laughing fit, reacting to his coach joking during a press conference on the impossibility of them taking anything other than a plane from Paris>Nantes (#CharAVoile).
🚅 Paris>Nantes by train: 2h07
The rematch having been set down for beginning of march, climate activists of @Alternantiba seized the opportunity to organize and challenge their local team @FCNantes to do better: #4marsEnTrain 🚅
Starting by an open letter to the club, joined by a petition signed by 11k people, accompanied by social media mobilization, and symbolically handing over a giant train ticket to the players - @Alternantiba kept the pressure growing up to the rematch date 👀
Finally, on friday, the day before #PSGFCN, @FCNantes|’s coach Antoine Kombouaré announced that the team is “happy to go by train”, which is “normal”, and would get back to Nantes by bus, as “3h30 on a bus has never killed anybody”. 🎉

Coach Kombouaré justified his decision by his sympathies to climate issues and personal experience, “I’m from New Caledonia, my family is concerned (…). In the Pacific, lots of islands will disappear because of rising sea levels.”

The club’s decision is good news for the climate - and a nice victory for the climate movement. We now call on @FCNantes and all other Ligue 1 teams to avoid taking a plane whenever possible. Futile air traffic is no longer acceptable. #BullshitFlights

“Bullshit Flights”: A debate on legitimate air traffic - Stay Grounded

Flying is essentially a luxury activity, and in many cases downright obscene. Our definition: bullshit flights are unnecessary, frivolous and unfair – and should be stopped immediately. This article summarizes the results of a Stay Grounded survey on bullshit flights, and poses some questions about the future of our mobility system.

Stay Grounded

In short: good game, @Alternantiba and @FCNantes ! 👏🎉 #4marsEnTrain
