Twitter died because what was once a space for openness and connection metastasized into a space for warring certainties. There is a cautionary metaphor in its demise β€” an important thing to guard against within ourselves.

@mariapopova Why on earth would I want "openness and connection" with the literal publisher of the Daily Stormer - just one of many white supremacists and neo-Nazis that the new owner has reinstated?

Not feeling safe on a platform that will, I repeat, actively reinstate neo-Nazis is not "warring certainties".

@mariapopova

There was a growth of interests seeking to cast doubt on science, elections and marginalized groups; harassment campaigns followed.

How do you even have "space for openness" if the explicit rallying cry of a large faction is that fairness and justice are anti-freedom?

Movements like BLM mobilized via Twitter. Does that make Black history merely one of its "warring certainties"? #FalseEquivalence

@mariapopova

The problem with Twitter is that it tried to be free and fair as a corporation. When marginalized (really oppressed) groups took advantage of that, the corporate class made an alliance with in-groups and took the advantage away.

At first it was in the form of troll farms, and when that was blunted it took the form of a corporate takeover.

@mariapopova I kinda hate this take, TBH. It feels very β€œIt was everyone’s fault”, when the reality is that it was being overrun with bigots who forced those of us in marginalized communities to act out and defend ourselves.

This comes across as victim blame-y, and I’m not here for that shit.

@mariapopova "A space for warring certainties."

1. Damn, that's well put.

2. But also, some certainties are correct, and others aren't, and when the difference can cost lives, war sometimes becomes needful.
