So a Plant in this experiment is made up of Segments and Buds (which extend Segment). There are three types of each: stem, root and leaf.

A plant starts with four segments: A stem bud, a stem segment, a root segment and a root bud. The stem bud points up, the root bud points down. Well mostly laterally, but downwards.

Every cycle a growth phase then a manage phase occurs.

In the growth phase, each stem and root segment consumes 1 sugar to increase its width a very small amount. Buds don't change width, they consume sugar to create new segments. Stem and root segments cost 1 sugar, stem and root buds cost 12 sugar. No other segments have been implemented.

Every cycle, a manage phase occurs, after the growth phase. Right now all segments magically acquire 2 sugar.

The plan right now is for roots to gather water and minerals. Sugar, water and minerals will be moved throughout the plant. Each leaf segment that is receiving light energy will use it to convert water and minerals into sugar.
