I've been putting up with TurboTax/Intuit my entire working life. Usually it's annoying to navigate the upsells and stuff. This year when I went to file, figuring out how to do it for free was less of a fine-print search and more of a scavenger hunt, navigating to misleading and/or irrelevant menus to find the button that the UI did not indicate was a button. Later in the process, I went to file education stuff for my spouse, and unlike previous filings TurboTax actually demanded I pay premium just to submit a 1098-T. Completely outrageous. I backed out of my work and created a FreeTaxUSA account. Imported my return from last year and was done in less than an hour without having to do a quadruple-take at every screen to avoid accidentally agreeing to fees. Literally zero problems.
To make it a bit better, when I set up my 2FA for the account, it gave me an option right on that page to simultaneously remove SMS as an option and require codes. Basically I'm probably going to send a Delete My Data request to Intuit and try to not think about what info they sold about me through their 3rd party "business partners".
