It’s very disturbing to see reputed leftists repeating the right wing attack line about Biden not going to East Palestine. The mayor of East Palestine told him not to come, told Katy Tur on MSNBC that the logistics and police involvement were more trouble than the town could manage. He’s doing what was asked.

After the Tree of Life pogrom, the city of Pittsburgh asked Trump not to come here because of the police stress, because police were stretched thin protecting the victims’ funerals. He came anyway. He did nothing for the victims by being here. He did nothing for the community. He walked around and looked at the flowers and said some typical and insincere Trump babble. It was a waste of everyone’s time.

Biden in East Palestine would be exactly the same.

@amaditalks except for the insincere bit
@beandog9 yes, he’d actually say his own words as well. Trump gave prepared remarks here and they were still incoherent nonsense.
@beandog9 @amaditalks
Could you explain why "insincere" is an inappropriate descriptor for Trump's Ohio visit? Maybe he didn't throw enough paper towels? Just asking (even if it sounds snarky).

@MKSinSA @beandog9 @amaditalks

Was he interested in helping the people there or only making political points by lying about the Biden admin? … and lying about his role in rescinding rail safety regulations.

@inklings @MKSinSA @beandog9 I believe that beandog was saying that insincere would not have been an appropriate description of Biden’s remarks had he gone to Ohio the way they were an appropriate description of Trump’s blather here.
@amaditalks
I'd rather Biden stay at the WH and sign an Exec Order mandating electric train braking systems.
@TCatInReality yes! Far more useful than a photo op visit.
@TCatInReality @amaditalks Unfortunately, such a thing could not be done by Executive Order (unless it were for trains being purchased by the government.)
@MugsysRapSheet @amaditalks
That would he a start.
But if Trump's admin could end the reg, then Biden's admin ought to be able to reinstate it (and quickly as they are far more competent)
@TCatInReality @amaditalks I looked into it. The "Positive Breaking System" Trump stopped in 2017 was only in the "proposal" stage when Trump tanked it. He didn't use an EO to kill it, so Biden can't bring it back via EO. It would still have to be approved by Kev's Kongress, 😞
@MugsysRapSheet @TCatInReality it was regulatory, not legislative. Which means it can be restored via the regulatory process.
@amaditalks @TCatInReality No, b/c there's nothing to restore. It was merely a proposal. All Biden can do is "propose" it again.

@amaditalks @TCatInReality I did a little more digging. While the DoT can establish new Regulations on trains, only Congress can pass a law decrying what punishment you get if you don't abide by it. And a Regulation with no enforcement mechanism is little more than a "request".

The exception: if the rail companies do a lot of business with the Federal Gov't, Biden can deny them contracts if they don't comply. 🤔

@TCatInReality @amaditalks I don't know what they are waiting for. This is the time to reverse everything Trump and his minions did. They will get a lot of support even from Trumpers. If they let this moment pass by, they may never get it back.
I wish I knew who to call to get the Dems and Biden admin to seize this moment.

@TCatInReality Agreed. Except the brakes weren't the problem. An axle bearing overheated and it passed two sensors on the tracks before being detected by a third. Too late by then.

All the bearing needed was regular greasing.

@amaditalks And Pittsburgh has the infrastructure to handle a major event. East Palestine does not. The entire city would be shut down so the president could get some photo ops and say some words.

And then the conservatives and certain people on the left would criticize that instead.

@q_aurelius right, because none of their criticism is good faith anyway.

@amaditalks

“We think the environment is toxic!

“Send in the President!”

@inklings ooooof. I didn’t even think about that part.

@amaditalks

Yeah I haven’t heard anyone mention it but seems worth a thought. I mean if they believe it’s still dangerous there its a pretty messed up demand.

@amaditalks
And that’s typical for any real president. The logistics, the large number of vehicles, the fact that local emergency services must cover the visit rather than do their jobs - all these things are reasons for previous, non-narcissistic presidents to not visit a disaster site early on. But the cult knows nothing but the lies they’re fed.
@nancyann exactly. It’s why Bush flew over New Orleans after Katrina, rather than visiting, though that was a mistake too.

@amaditalks In RepublicanLand, if you don't see it with your own eyes, it doesn't exist (eg: Border "chaos", Russian aggression, disaster areas...)

The one (conspicuous) exception: "God". 🤔

@amaditalks

Leftists are more often than not most interested in sabotaging Democrats.

@amaditalks
First off what's Biden going to do. Those people HATE His ASS. They are the dumbest people in Ohio. AND THAT, is some big Stupid.

@amaditalks

Glad to see Amadi Loveleace on Mastodon.

@amaditalks

Billionaire conspirator papers will not report this.

Oh my look at how many conspirators there are.

@amaditalks And if he'd gone they would have complained it was for a photo op.
@wasootch exactly. There was no way to win with anyone other than supporters who didn’t need it.

@amaditalks Dems need to learn something; Americans have high expectations of Dems than of Republicans.

Dems need to act one step ahead of the Republicans. Always!!

@Agora there was no way to do that here. If he didn’t go, he was an unfeeling, horrible person for not going. If he did go, he was an unfeeling, horrible person for making it all about himself, going just for a photo op, using up the resources of a town already stretched thin, and so on and so on. They are going to criticize him regardless of what he does.
@amaditalks I know. But, Dems must avoid the Pete scenario where he goes after right-wingers force him to. That looks worse.
Dems will always get this response because right-wingers are shameless and don't care that they are hypocrites.
Until Dems stop being so sensitive, they must think two steps ahead of these assholes. Always
@Agora the mistake is thinking that the decisions of this administration are made because of right wing force. That’s just not how it works. Them taking credit for making the secretary of transportation do something is just them lying, again, as usual.
@amaditalks perception matters. It doesn't matter why Pete decided to go to East Palestine. The perception and this is in the news and on the podcasts I listen to, is that he went after receiving backlash.
Right-wingers don't care about facts. Unfortunately, liberals don't have mass “propaganda” networks like Fox. Most popular podcasts are by right-wingers. By the time the why of something comes to light, the lie has gone around the world three times over.
@amaditalks People tend to find it far more enjoyable to make assumptions without having all the information.
@amaditalks Hey, Trump showed up a few days after with pallets of expired Trump water, old stock. You can bet he charged Trump foundation for that, and a photo op to boot. Grifters are as grifters do.
@amaditalks Any error was in not publicizing that earlier.
@amaditalks plus he has to allow those who are to be doing things do their job before he steps in if not done...
@amaditalks The president & vp have better things to do than photo ops or grandstanding at disasters or at the border wall. Let the relevant public officials go and report back. That's literally their jobs.
