The WeChat ecosystem in China is just insane. Literally every vendor from small stands to big stores only takes WeChat pay. Cash is even not accepted in most stores cause nobody has change. Stores even load their WeChat apps via QR and you order and pay in one easy flow. Crazy
Of course, wechat pay needs a mainland China bank account for payments. If you don’t have one you’re basically fucked in China these days
Also, only about half the stores take credit card, and the ones that do *really * don’t want to
Holy cow, even the highway toll booths take WeChat pay
@S1 What about Alipay?
@keroro nonexistent. I expect mostly online only. Only physical ones are WeChat pay and Union pay

@S1 It's actually very tourist unfriendly. Tourists usually don't have these apps. There are WeChat Pay and Alipay in Hong Kong but the HK wallets don’t always work in every merchant.

On the contrary, when I visit Tokyo, I can safely assume I can buy something by the credit cards, Suica and cash on my hand

@keroro Exactly. You can’t even set up a WeChat Pay wallet with a foreign credit card. There are no ways for tourists to survive here.

I actually landed in HK and crossed into China this time, but after I finish business here I’ll be staying in HK for a week. HK insists it wants tourists to visit, so I’ll see how well I do as a tourist there…

@S1 I hope you will have a nice trip in here 😂

We still mandate a mask in the public, but luckily it’s still not so hot these days

@keroro Oh are you in china or HK?
@S1 ah, maybe my previous post mislead you. I hope you will have a nice trip when you visit us later
@keroro Oh yeah! I’m looking forward to HK, it’s a shame I can’t visit Kowloon Walled City haha 😅
@S1 haha, I also didn't visit there
