There is a cutie pie 2 now.
I watched a bit and it was much the same as #cutiePie 1.
To tell the truth, I couldn't pay any attention to it after seeing that My Beautiful Man 2 is airing.
Because in #mbm2 the characters continue to feel real to me. And their struggles to communicate, and Hira's struggles with self worth. And Kiyoi's fear that Hira will never love him like he wants him too. They tug at the heart strings. The characters are so well drawn, that I can't get into other stories.
And I realize that when I watch romances, especially male romances, it isn't enough to get both characters in a room lusting after each other. There has to be some reason why they are better together than apart.
So forgive me as I have a small rant about the Japanese show #mybeautiful man ... again.
In My Beautiful Man, the couple seems mismatched. A beautiful popular guy, and a stalkery loner0 boy. But appearances can deceiving.
The handsome man, Kiyoi, likes the stalkery guy, Hira. He isn't turned off by his stutter or appearance. He is turned off by his low self image, and his tendency to separate himself by putting Kiyoi on a pedestal.
Hira thinks Kiyoi's beauty is literally divine, and that he is only worthy to serve him. He also misinterprets his actions. #myBeautifulMan
What makes the story special is that from a birdseye view, we see that they are well matched. Kiyoi has a deep need to be loved and watched. Hira has a great desire to watch Kiyoi.
But, although Kiyoi learns to be more honest about saying directly what he wants, he often resorts to insulting language and hitting Hira when he is embarrassed or feels hurt.
Hira wants to be with Kiyoi, but he doesn't think he deserves to be with him. This makes him passive when he should acknowledge him. #mbm2
So when Kiyoi wants to show off his boyfriend Hira, Hira won't acknowledge him thinking people would think less of Kiyoi because they are mismatched.
But Kiyoi needs to be acknowledged because he needs to feel loved. And Hira denying him is a betrayal.
And yet they care so much about each other. The audience hurts with every painful misunderstanding.
Then again we are cheering when they get each other finally...finally. They have the potential to be very happy or fall apart. #mbm2
So many cosy scenes in this show. It pleases both those who love fluff, and those who like angst.
Luckily, I like both.
