🤯 idea for how to replace dependency on gas sales taxes for road maintenance: payroll tax on businesses per employee required to be in a particular physical place to do their job (non WFH). Discourage wasteful commuting, protect WFH, & lower need for roads at the same time as getting the revenue.

@dalias Even simpler idea: tax every parking space a business owns. If your employees OR your customers have to drive to you, you take responsibility for paying for the roads that got them there.

Multiple benefits of making businesses think twice about just how much land they need to pave for parking.

@alopex Yes but employers will try to externalize that cost by not providing parking, making employees find & pay for garage spaces or something. The tax should really be on the requirement for an employee to commute not something you can externalize.

@dalias @alopex Simply prevent them from mandating on-site without spaces provided at their cost.

Eliminating parking minimums is also a requirement for this to work well.

This alone is already a very good justification for putting that much pressure on eliminating #presenteism.

And Black folk in the US experience constant racial stress. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3417124/ Okay now this one just seems excessive! Really? How is this real? Just the act of being Black in the US, and dodging all the other stuff daily, can stress you out enough to hurt you too? Yes. Really. I want you to understand why so many Black people prefer remote work. The stress reduction is real, and significant.
