canada's immigration system is murderous
@velexiraptor can you please clarify if you could please? 🥺 (American here)
@Airoblast the immigration system makes it deliberately difficult for anyone who isn't "skilled labour" to gain residence with any degree of stability, and my more specific complaint is that even for asylum seekers or "skilled labour" the processing times for any sort of residence application have skyrocketed literally exponentially to the point where it is incredibly difficult to navigate the system. its a black box where you cannot inquire about the status of your application, and the online system is so error-prone it is often impossible to navigate for even skilled users - and physical paperwork is simply lost as a matter of course to the point where even the government acknowledges that its preferable to use the (broken) online portal. this doesnt even touch the settler-colonial function of immigration or borders, but thats a broader societal critique than im making here
@Airoblast im also american, but ive been navigating the canadian immigration system for the past ~5 years. its dogshit, and im in a very privileged position w/r/t some of the factors that go into my applications for residence and work permits
@Airoblast anyway, the reason im calling it murderous is because the stresses that it applies to immigrants can not only trap them in situations where it is illegal for them to work in the country and illegal for them to leave the country without losing their right to remain in the country (me, up until about a week ago), it can trap immigrants in unstable and dangerous housing conditions, and all of these pressures create an undue and long-term mental health burden on already vulnerable communities that increases suicide risk.
@velexiraptor dang that sucks, but seeing as I am going to get my masters degree (eventually) I was hoping to immigrate to canada but now I see it's not so easy
