California wave measurement system measures the face of the wave...
Oh btw, we're talking about #surfing.
So if you're standing on shore looking at a wave, and the face is 40'.
That SAME wave by the Hawaii wave measurement system is 20'.
BECAUSE... when people started surfing #Waimea (Hawaii) there weren't spectators on shore, just the surfers out in it, so by necessity they measured the BACK of the wave.
The reason I looked up wave measurements is I was showing @elfin a video from #TheEddie where all the surfers rolled off their boards as this huge wave came along. Something I've never seen before and neither had Elf, and he's surfed.
Anyway, The Eddie is named after Eddie Aikau who was a #surfer and the 1st lifeguard of #Waimea & the entire #NorthShore, who had saved over 500 lives braving 30' waves that nobody else would go out in. Eddie Would Goβ’

I'm from Santa Cruz, *The Mountains*, so when I wander downhill "to surf", I swim west and let The Pacific Ocean slap me in the vague direction of the beach while hoping to not catch the stream to Capitola WHILE drinking a shitload of sea-water.
