Gary, Indiana: City of the Century | Abandoned America

Originally a thriving steel town and home to the Jackson Five, the city of Gary, Indiana now lies in ruins. | Abandoned America

@AbandonedAmerica I was born in South Chicago, lived in Hammond, Indiana (neighboring city to Gary) at various points.

Even though I no longer live in the area, my mind still frequently struggles to understand the cities that border Lake Michigan in Indiana.

Undoubtedly, racism was the bedrock of decline for Hammond, Gary and East Chicago - and still infects them all significantly.

@AbandonedAmerica I had always thought (perhaps dreamed) there was a brief window (around 2000-2010) that they could come back in some fashion with the right investments.

I used to be casually involved with various economic development parties in and around that area.

I recommend watching "The King of Steel Town" by director Chris Sautter. I am familiar with the area and its politics. #Gary, #Hammond, #EastChicago...very particular.

@pmroman @AbandonedAmerica Yup. I have seen that multiple times. 😉

I got it on VHS.

Hard to get a copy these days.

@adamjcook @AbandonedAmerica There were cd copies of this, and another couple of Indiana political history documentaries, by him.
@adamjcook @AbandonedAmerica Those were the good old times
