THREAD

The latest filing by Dominion Voting Systems in its defamation suit against Fox nails something critics have long argued for.

Fox is not a news organization. It's something else.

But what is this other thing? In this thread, I will try to answer that.

Next slide, please. 1/

You and I have been arguing this forever. Why, oh why have journalists and news organizations been so reluctant to (1) cover Fox as the malign political actor it is and (2) shun it by, e.g., refusing their people membership in professional organizations. The call about the end of journalistic integrity is coming from inside the house.

I repeatedly begged MSNBC on MSNBC to start a feature: ‘We watch Fox so you don’t have to’ (which might be why I haven’t been on lately). So from my @newmarkjschool center, I funded Juliet Jeske to start @DecodingFoxNews: to show us what Fox is--and is not--telling its audience.

@jeffjarvis @newmarkjschool @DecodingFoxNews

I didn't realize that. I have seen the account.

I am supposed to be on MSNBC this week to discuss this thread. Very often, of course, such booking evaporate.

On his podcast, Olbermann has told stories of MSNBC going soft on Fox in exchange for them going soft on them. That was back when Ailes was there though.

@jeffjarvis @jayrosen_nyu @newmarkjschool I see that @DecodingFoxNews was *briefly *posting on Mastodon late last year but soon reverted to being birdsite only. This is disappointing, to say the least.
@wubfur @jayrosen_nyu @newmarkjschool @DecodingFoxNews She's busy watching Fox so we don't have to.
@jeffjarvis @jayrosen_nyu @newmarkjschool @DecodingFoxNews Right, but who’s going to watch *Twitter* so we don’t have to?
@jeffjarvis @jayrosen_nyu @newmarkjschool @DecodingFoxNews But seriously, there has been a dispiriting trend of people who came over to Mastodon in the weeks following Leon Skum’s taking command of Twitter not sticking around. Perhaps they were bedeviled by the complexities of the Fediverse (to my way of thinking relatively minor, but I understand that people’s mileage varies pretty widely on this) and decided they preferred the devil they knew. I get it, but also wish for more sticktoitiveness.
@jeffjarvis @jayrosen_nyu @newmarkjschool @DecodingFoxNews MSNBC is not the inverse of Fox. Fox is devoted to getting the GOP elected. MSNBC is an organization run by conservatives that sees liberals as an underserved demographic, so they allow some liberal hosts on to get an audience but they certainly do not want progressive change.
@jeffjarvis that used to be The Daily Show’s job
