just stumbled across an old "link shortening service" link that just 404s ( http://tr.im ) and lol, those shitty things are going to obliterate so much internet history in due time aren't they
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
"Wayback Machine has not archived that URL."
Nothing beside remains.
@jplebreton In my experience the Wayback Machine has good coverage of link shorteners but yeah it's a long-time known issue. They spun off a non-profit foundation to try to get link shorteners to share their databases in escrow so they don't have to rely on scraping for coverage, but a bunch of the major companies don't share theirs.
@pervognsen @jplebreton what is that non-profit called?

@basil @jplebreton The ones that could simply be seized by governments are the my personal favorites.

Every dot-L-Y redirect is the Libyan government's for the asking.

There's no way this has any grounding in fact, but one of my personal favourite conspiracy theories is that the Arab Spring was engineered to destabilize the Libyan state enough to prevent them from realizing they could interdict enough of the web to catastrophically undermine western economies.

@jplebreton

Hmm, reminds me of myspace Db's being also lost. Ugh.
