Amazing!

Woodpeckers are amazing, they can literally walk straight up a tree. This is an excellent shot of a red bellied woodpecker. The bird showed up right in front of me yesterday while Charlie and I were sitting outside.

"Woodpeckers have bodies that are designed to climb up a tree and hammer into it. Their feet are zygodactyl, having two toes pointing forward and two pointing backward. A long, stiff tail gives them balance while maneuvering up a tree and their strong, sharp bills allow them to hammer away at the bark." - wikipedia.org

@Swede1952 woodpeckers are amazing! Their long tongues retract and wrap around to the back of their heads. The tongue is an integral part of cranial anatomy and act as a cushion to protect the birds skull and brain when it strikes a tree in search of food or when excavating a nesting cavity

Ohhh 😮 I didn’t know that. That’s a cool piece of information.

Thank you!
