Hi folks. Starting a buisness. I need to register a domain name and possibly find a host for my page. What is the best way to do that? What should I avoid? I have identified a name that is free. If it matters it will be a local martial arts school. Thanks...
@Kf7gd Personally I use GoDaddy for domains but not for hosting - I use a UK based VPS for that. There are many. I recommend you use an email address that is the same domain as your website, it always looks better that way. Many providers sell complete packages (e.g. GoDaddy) that does just that. Make sure you 'own' the domain yourself i.e. the web host does not own the domain but you do.
@M0RVB thank you I had read sometimes godaddy makes it hard to transfer to other services. How do you know if you own the domain?
I plan to transfer to a service to manage my online presence after the school opens in a more comercial location in about a year. I am not a great internet person. I just like to teach kids.
@Kf7gd I may be out of date on the owned thing but years back some domain sellers owned it rather than you. With GoDaddy you own them and can deal as you wish. Anyway you can always keep the domain with GoDaddy and point the DNS entry at some other web server or even point the nameserver entries at another provider so no real need to move the domain. I had 250+ domains that way but retired in 2018 so my info may be out of date!
