SUVs suck, EV edition

PS: Don't write an article about SUVs that fails to mention that "every life saved in a large vehicle came at the expense of 4.3 dead pedestrians, motorcyclists and car drivers."

Just How Good for the Planet Is That Big Electric Pickup Truck?

E.V.s are usually a more climate-friendly option. But as they bulk up, their emissions savings, and other environmental and safety benefits, begin to diminish.

The New York Times

@gwagner motorcyclists are toast no matter what- somewhere there are death rates for them showing it's about 10x more than any other vehicle. Lawrence of Arabia died in a motorcycle crash, after which his neurosurgeon did a study showing the life saving importance of wearing a helmet. And yet people are up in arms about laws requiring them.

As tragic as vehicle crashes are, their deaths only equal deaths from the flu, which in turn are dwarfed by covid deaths.

@gwagner
They're an incredibly selfish option that shldn't be available to buy. As well as harming local communities, the impact on our planet will be devastating

From the article:
"The battery used to power General Motors’ Hummer E.V., for example, uses about the same amount of lithium per rider as three smaller car batteries or 240 electric bike batteries, according to a recent report. And it uses about half as much lithium as a battery that can power an entire electric bus."

@gwagner Hi. Just wanted to say this grateful mom/grandmum looks at big pickups differently now. I used to feel critical of my son in law’s until my family was t boned by a drunk barreling through a light, and all 4 of them walked away w/only trauma and bruising. Not an EV story but OMG you should see that totaled truck. Seatbelts, curtain airbags, crumple zones, and size kept them on earth for me to love. (2 cents 😉✌🏻)
