A lot of the protests against the GH2 project on the Port-au-Port penn. have come across as reactionary, #NIMBY, opposed to jobs and success, etc.

That's pretty much true from what I've seen - but also, it's fair for the local to be upset. It's the whole peninsula at play here.

Port au Port-Stephenville Wind Power and Hydrogen Generation Project (Project Nujio’qonik GH2) - Environment and Climate Change

Environment and Climate Change

With land ownership what it is, there are likely many who literally feel this is their backyard - as known in the communities, though never formally registered with the crown (as in any of the outports). No denying it either, the 164 turbines there would not be subtle. And certainly.. 'IMBY'..

Also, as with many things, and many times in history, it seems the greatest support comes from those on the #Avalon - the whole crux of the #Bayman / #Townie divide. There is an element of #imposition by others who strand to share some of the benefits, but not the costs. Paternalistic talk about jobs doesn't help that, either.

The project itself has all the hallmarks another #Sprung greenhouse as well. It appears promising, or more correctly makes a lot of promises. It's being sold to us as a grifter would sell grift, very shady and questionable feel to it all.

The embodied and stacked inefficiencies of the water supply, multiple conversions, and #ammonia transportation ... to Europe ... are staggering.

Which is not to say there wouldn't be a ROI as presented, but red flag
question is - how are there not a more efficient local potential, or a closer market target?

Still, to develop the port for export, and to increase our ability to export energy in particular is an extremely valuable proposition. As we close in on the Churchill contract expiring, and while #GullIsland lingers on the drawing
board, more export options = better bargaining position with #Quebec.

(The quality of discourse, polarisation along political lines, dismissal or adherence to self-selected "facts", and positions taken or dismissed based on a combination of emotion & packaged positional pieces ('playbooks', 'talking points', etc.) - these are endemic issues, beyond this one project. Maybe the kids of today will get it right when it's their turn.)
