I keep forgetting I’m around a lot of new people here and people don’t know basic facts about me like I have two degrees in information science and have mostly taught in library and information programs my whole career. It’s fine, it’s just jarring and weird.

(Is it me or is there a lot more mansplaining on this web site, too?)

Like I don’t need basic pedagogy advice and I don’t need basic info about libraries. I was asking colleagues/academic librarians for the state of the art. Some folks I don’t really know are just trying to tell me how to be a professor or introducing research to students 101. I guess I have to be more precise in what I ask, or something. Or just ignore the (as my bff calls it) “dishelpful” responses. Meanwhile, people I’ve been engaging with for ages are giving helpful answers - thanks!

@ubiquity75 so real, and this gets into a fundamental fuckup of social technology broadly:

People don’t understand when they aren’t the audience

and the UI promotes a misleading narcissism where some people (men) then assume they are the audience for EVERYTHING. On Twitter, Erica Baker is a masterclass in pre-scoping all the dishelpful categories she doesn’t want responses in

@danilo lol. Thank you for picking up and running with “dishelpful!”
@ubiquity75 naw, "dishelpful" is a fundamental BREAKTHROUGH in mansplain theory, hat's off to your bff
@danilo He coined it after finding that “unhelpful” was too passive.

@ubiquity75 right, it really captures the disruptive, furniture-humping-terrier vibes

"oh, no one trained you to act right”

@ubiquity75 It hasn't been as bad as Twitter for that. Of course in the early days Twitter wasn't that bad, either. Hoping over time Mastodon doesn't devolve.

@ubiquity75 Know when to mute. Know when to block. Know when to filter.

Mute, block, filter. Keep your mental health intact.

Adoption from the 🐦 app to the 🐘 app is 🚀ing. So this is to be expected.

@mastobit know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em, know when to walk away, know when to run.
@ubiquity75 yeah there’s a heavy contingent of unreformed splainers who seem to have been lurking from the early days of the fediverse. But I think some of it is also that the higher engagement is getting some of us in front of people who don’t have any context or familiarity with our expertise, too. Doesn’t make it that much less annoying, but at least it’s comprehensible.

Know when to toot ‘em
Know when to mute ‘em
Know when to talk away
Know when to shun

There'll be time to count engagement
When you've had some fun 🎶

I saw that you published this troet as public @jesuisatire, I wonder if you can delete the mentions of profiles, that way it looks cleaner and is "nicer" to boost.

(also I do not know if those profiles prefer some attention and there for want to be dragged into this)

In other words, fav if you prefer to be left out and of course also if you don't, @irwindev, @mmasnick, @anildash, @ubiquity75, @CJP.

😇

@anildash

Is it (wo)mansplaining or trying to help out?

To me it looks like there are a lot of people coming over here that are basically expecting things that are different here, or things others and in particular oldies just don't want this to become.

I live in a world that lives and whas programmed on fb and whatsapp and they simply act like form another planet.

There is no way to know your "expertise" and nobody checks every time the profile first.

@ubiquity75

@jesuisatire @anildash This is a great example of what I’m talking about. Thank you for providing it.
@anildash (I have now blocked this dork.)

@[email protected] Thanks for offering suggestions. "Ta" is British thank you, seen in films and family reunions. Turoet is Spanish for post or toot? My instance installed translation, you cant invoke it, BUT the instance has an algorithm to put a click link on a toot offering translation. Algorithm seems to be more than chosen languag of the poster.

@ubiquity75 @dpnash There’s mansplaining everywhere.
