😅
@willoremus this reminds me--loved your interview with Lizzie O'Leary. (Assuming that was really you talking, of course.)

@willoremus

Honestly I don't understand why the news is freaking out over #chatgpt. Quite frankly I wish people would cover it for what it is. A tool. It isn't the end of education, educators just need to be a bit more creative.

#gptzero will only help so much, as so long as you change a few words it'll say written by a human.

In addition, at big universities there is no way professor reads all 200 essays.

#professorsOfMastodon feel free to correct my assumption

#education #university

@zbecker @willoremus I remember educators panicking about Wikipedia. I’m embarrassed to say that when I was teaching, I told my students they couldn’t use it as a source in their papers.

This was decades ago. I think ChatGPT is going the same route. A tool for research.

And as a #FormerProfessorofMastodon, I read every essay. I almost went insane.

@caycepollard @willoremus

I salute your dedication, I had to take a public speaking class and I went nuts having to hear everyone's speeches. It was painful.

Honestly you shouldn't use #wikipedia as a sourced as it isn't static. Wikipedia's sources are another story.

@zbecker @willoremus I agree and came around to students using Wikipedia as a research tool, but not a main source. The sources used for an entry were allowed.

I used to teach Composition, Literature, Media Studies, and Critical Thinking.

The essays were so painful to read. It took me hours to get through just one class

@caycepollard @willoremus

Wow, thank you for your service and dedication. I have had a few professors like you who really read my essays and provided suggestions. I didn't like them, it is wonderful to see when a professor cares like that.

Regarding even suggesting #wikipedia as a research tool to your students, wow, I have had professors that I loved flat out say you can't do (which I ignored). Even if it took time to adapt, you were still above average when it comes to change ime

@willoremus
YES!
Because it can be so wonderful and allow people to own things they really like, but we'll have to be able to tell it apart from 'real content'.
I lately have been wondering about a world in which everything was done by AI. What could humans do then? Well, art. Express themselves via art. And of course train AI, unless AI by that time trained itself.
@willoremus I guess safeguards against self- incrimination have not yet been written into the code 😊

@willoremus

Interviewer: “So tell me ChatGPT, what would you say is your greatest weakness?”

ChatGPT:

@willoremus
"But let's get real," lol.

Has it been training excessively on the 80s? Just sounds so goofy & archaic. Anyone would instantly know this wasn't written by Gen Z, or even a Millenial - probably not even Gen X.
