The WA state legislature has three bills that will help protect trans-folks fleeing persecution from anti-trans states.

If you live in WA, it's super-easy to register that you're PRO a bill, and so I'd love it if you'd all clicky-clicky:

https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=5489&Initiative=false&Year=2023

https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=5599&Initiative=false&Year=2023

(Go ahead and Boost this one, if you would, too)

(Edit because my wife found a third - there are actually more, but these seem highest priority right now)

Washington State Legislature

@pyoor

Done and done. Every day I hear of more and more terrible bills being proposed to victimize trans kids. Glad I can actually do something about it, even if it's just a small thing.

@pyoor Is there anywhere that translates the bills into their actual effect in plain language? (Similar to how ballot measures get a reasonably readable description in the voter's guide?) It's pretty hard to figure out what amending RCW 5.51.020, 5.56.010, 9.73.040, 9.73.260, 10.55.020, 10.88.250,
4 10.88.320, 10.88.330, 10.96.020, 10.96.040, and 40.24.030 will do unless I take the time to learn what all those already say ...
@gfwellman Yes, when you look up a bill on the legislature website it should have a report. So, for example, on https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=5599&Year=2023&Initiative=false#documentSection on this page is a section marked documents. In that, if you click on the senate report that starts with a brief summary of the purpose of the bill.

@gfwellman I can't recall who writes that, so I'd be wary of it on any bill that is written by someone who is likely to be a bigot :-/

Those summaries will usually only be available once it's been through some part of the committee process, as I understand it.

If you look at the bill sponsors website that may also have some information, or finding coverage on the news. But there's no formal way that's required at a bill's introduction, afaik.

@pyoor Thanks! That's *so* much more readable!
@pyoor I'm getting the hang of this now. Another useful bit of information on those bill pages is a link to the companion bill (if exists yet). So for example, the first and third links in your top-of-thread post are the Senate/House companion pair of the same bill. Presumably one should indicate support to one's Senator for the former and to one's Reps for the latter. Thanks again!
@pyoor I don’t live in WA but I boosted this. It is important we protect the rights of humans in general, and work to change the minds of those that disagree. Hopefully this reaches enough people to have an impact.
@pyoor Doing all the things right now. I really appreciate how this system lets us chime in along the way.
@pyoor Whew! Five letters written. 💜
@pyoor Letter to editor in local paper. the word mutilation* and transgendered* seems to have saturated the hate wave after Roe lost money fungibility. They do want to kill us all.
@pyoor thanks for sharing this, I sent it to WA peeps and they had no idea how easy
@pyoor I like the way the first bill casually squashes a fossilized use of the subjunctive along the way too.
