On the birdsite I read a thread by someone using ChatGPT with questions about a sensitive political topic. It reminded me of something I realized years ago about neural nets: they can't explain the reasons behind their output aside from claims that statistically they are right x% of the time on data they've been tested with so far. That doesn't work in the courts or in any context where you have to cite sources and argue about which to rely on when they conflict.

Apparently there are articles about ChatGPT's political biases, which I have too little energy to track down. But maybe the college essay is less than utterly doomed, if we have enough grading time to demand and check sources and evaluate their credibility. You know, the stuff those essays were supposed to involve in the first place.

But that requires grading by subject experts already familiar with standard sources and skilled in evaluating new ones. Not inexperieced TAs and the usual typically overworked and underpaid term adjunct. I was blessed with exactly such a Philisophy prof when I was taking a post-degree course at Queen's (Kingston, Ontario).
